Wool Tartans

From the very inception of SMWHome, we planned on be the premier source for authentic Scottish tartans.  We offer an exciting mixture of traditional ‘well-known’ patterns - a few more ‘obscure’ fabrics - and a collection of custom tartans designed by Scot Meacham Wood exclusively for our collection.  Enjoy shopping.

MacKinnon Hunting Tartan

Featured both in our Beatrice Cottage Collection and Equestrian Tartans Collections - MacKinnon tartan features a warm chocolate ground with vibrant windowpane details.

The Mackinnon tartan has a history tied to a prominent Highland clan with strong connections to the islands of Mull and SKyle, claiming descent from Kenneth MacAlpin, the first King of Scotland. Their clan history features a powerful ancestral link to Iona and St. Columba, as reflected in their clan arms. The clan also famously supported Robert the Bruce and later the Jacobite cause, which led to the loss of their ancestral lands by the mid-18th century.

Our Equestrian Tartan Collection features equine-inspired wool tartan and bold motif prints

The Anderson tartan's specific origin and date are unknown, but it complex, ‘fancy,’ pattern style emerged in the years leading up to the 1822 royal visit by HM Queen Victoria to Edinburgh - becoming popular for aesthetic rather than purely traditional reasons. It represents the Anderson family, associated with Clan Ross in the Highlands and having Lowland roots, and features a unique seven-color check that is often recognized by its rich blue, red, green, and yellow colors.

Stewart Weathered Tartan

$ 225.00

The Stewart Weathered Tartan refers to a muted, earthy version of the Stewart clan's traditional hunting tartan, designed to resemble the natural fading of colors from older, vegetable-dyed fabrics. Historically, ‘weathered’ tartans were created to mimic the subtle colours produced by natural dyes in the mid-19th century. The Stewart clan's history is deeply tied to Scottish royalty, with the "Stewart Royal" tartan being their famous pattern, and the "Weathered" version offers a less vibrant aesthetic for the hunting tartan, which itself is distinct from the well-known Royal Stewart tartan

Lindsay Tartan

$ 225.00

The Lindsay tartan represents Clan Lindsay, one of Scotland's oldest families, with its roots tracing back to the 11th century, though the specific tartan pattern emerges in the 19th century. The tartan's design features dark blue and burgundy colors, symbolizing the Scottish landscape, loyalty, and strength. While tartan patterns were originally tied to available dyes rather than clans, the Lindsay tartan became a distinct identifier for the clan, particularly after its popularization by the 1842 publication Vestiarium Scoticum.

The Stuart of Bute tartan is associated with the Stuart of Bute Family, a branch of Clan Stewart, and its history tied to along Robert II, who granted lands on Bute to his natural son. The tartan's specific design, a red-based pattern, was popularized by the Vestiarium Scoticum in the 1840s, although a less approved maroon ("hunting") version also exists. The current Marquess of Bute (the Clan Chief) has approved a specific shade of the tartan.

Campbell of Argyll Tartan

$ 225.00

The Campbell of Argyll tartan was created by the 6th Duke of Argyll around 1815, who added a white line to the plain Campbell tartan to distinguish his chief's sett, though the tartan itself has varied and is not officially recognized as a unique Campbell tartan by the Clan Society, unlike the Black Watch or the officially approved Campbell tartans. The original idea to create a distinct tartan for the Duke was not well-received by the wider Campbell clan

Londonderry Hunting Tartan

$ 225.00

Londonderry Tartan does not have a long historical connection to the county - unlike some other "ancient" Scottish tartans. The design features green, bright coral, and gold with black accents and symbolizes the rich cultural heritage of the region, with some believing it is a representation of the Ulster Tartan, which is based on fabric found in a bog in County Derry in 1956.
