The Duke of Fife (or Fife Modern) tartan was designed in the late 19th century, around the 1879’s - 1889’s, by Fraser Ross & Co. of Glasgow, specifically for the wedding of Alexander Duff to HRH Princess Louise, the daughter of HM King Edward VII. This event led to the creation of the Dukedom of Fife. The tartan's design differs slightly from the modern district tartan and is noted for its connection to this royal union

An original piece of tartan material was discovered in a peat bog in Glen Affric in the Highlands around 40 years ago. After testing by the Scottish Tartans' Authority, it was confirmed to be the oldest in the world, dating from around the years 1500-1600.  SMW Home is excited to share this modern interpretation of an iconic Scottish history.

Fraser Modern Tartan isn’t a single ancient design, but a 19th-century invention, a vibrant, modern reinterpretation of the historical clan tartans that were often destroyed or altered during the 250 years after the 1746 Jacobite uprising.  The Fraser clan itself has a rich history, originating from Norman France in the 12th century with a prominent role in Scottish independence and Jacobite uprisings, leading to a split into lowland and highland branches (Frasers of Philorth and Lovat, respectively). The modern tartan is a contemporary expression of this heritage, embracing innovation and a broader, romanticized view of Scottish culture popular in the 19th century

The Gunn Modern tartan features bolder colors with navy, bottle green, black, and a red line, reflecting the introduction of synthetic dyes in the late 1800s that allowed for stronger color production compared to natural dyes used for the ancient tartan.

Our Hepburn Muted Tartan is a modern color adaptation of the ancient Hepburn tartan, designed to be a softer, more subdued version with a palette of deep burgundy, muted green, earthy brown, soft blue, and black.  It reflects the Heoburn clan’s historic connection to the Scottish Lowlands, a powerful border family with Scottish and Northumbrian roots, and their legacy through figures like James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell - husband of Mary, Queen of Scots.
